Product Description

Helicoil Thread Repair Kits are used for creating stronger internal threads in all metals, composites, polymers and other materials by repairing damaged or stripped internal threads and regaining the original size. Helicoil Thread Repair Kit creates longer lasting threads, avoids thread over sizing, increases possibility of higher torque application, significantly reduces the bolt breaking problems & protects against corrosion.

Helicoil Kit & Configuration

Helicoil Thread Repair Kits are available in metric series from range M2 to M56, in imperial series UNC/UNF & BSW/BSF starting from # 2-64 / 2-56 to 1-1/4 inch.
Helicoil Thread Repair Kit comes as a sturdy plastic carrying case. It contains an HSS-threading tap; insert installation tool, a drill bit, tang breaking pin & complimentary stainless steel inserts.

Helicoil Insert System

Helicoil is a Thread Insert used for creating stronger internal threads in soft metals and also for repairing damaged or stripped internal threads by regaining the original size.

Helicoil Inserts provide positive means for protecting and strengthening all tapped threads. It protects tapped threads against wear and damage in all metals and other materials. Helicoil Inserts develop maximum clamping load and bolt tension through efficient use of applied torque.

Helicoil Material

Helicoil Inserts or Wire Thread Inserts are made of cold rolled 18-8 grade Stainless Steel to AMS 7245 & MIL-I-8846 . This wire is cold rolled to a diamond cross section producing an ultimate tensile strength of approximately 1375-1725 MPa, mirror like surface finish of 2-4 Microns and flank hardness of RC 43-50 which is far in excess of the usual tapped materials and best suited for most of the industrial needs.

Helicoil Inserts can also be supplied in other materials such as SS-316, Inconel, Nimonic 90, Phosphorus Bronze, Beryllium Copper and with special coating and plating requirements such as Cadmium plating, Silver plating, Zinc plating and dry film lubricants, Anti- Corrosion / Salt spray resistant coatings.

Helicoil Types & Range

Helicoil standard range is available in Stainless Steel AISI-304/ DTD 734, metric series ranges from M1.6, M2 to M56 & in unified series from UNC / UNF 2-56 to 1-1/4 inch. Helicoil Inserts are available as free running and thread locking or screw locking inserts as a standard product in both metric and imperial range.

Helicoil is also available in tape feed or reel mounted form, which are best suited for significantly reducing the installation time using power tool for installation of inserts.

Free Running Inserts

In the free state Helicoil Inserts are greater in diameter than the tapped hole into which they are installed. In the assembly operation the torque applied to the tang reduces the diameter of the leading coil and permits it to enter the tapped thread. When the torque or rotation is stopped, the coils expand with a spring-like action anchoring the insert permanently in place against the tapped hole.

No staking, locking, swaging, keying, nor interference fit is required to retain Helicoil Inserts, thereby eliminating stress concentration in the parent material. The Helicoil Insert automatically adjusts itself, radially and axially, to any expansion or contraction of the parent material.

 Helicoil Screw Lock Inserts.

It comes in Metric Coarse, Metric Fine, UNC and UNF varieties. It provides an exclusive, resilient internal locking thread that grips the bolt and prevents it from loosening under vibration or impact. One or more coils of the insert, having a series of straight segments/ chords, achieve locking action.
It permits repeated assembly and disassembly and will not relax their grip on the screw even in tough metals such as cast iron, alloy steel, titanium, etc. It positively secures threaded members against loosening caused by vibration and shock.
It has a high reusable factor permitting frequent removal and reassembly of bolt without appreciable loss of torque. It has positive self-locking torque, complying with MIL-I-8846 & MIL-N-25027. It eliminates the usage of lock wiring, lock nuts, lock washers, chemical compounds, plastic pellets/ patches and other locking mechanisms.
The inserts are subjected to extensive tests in tension, torque, shear, vibration and fatigue, conducted by the American & European companies. Its applications include sectors like Aviation & Aerospace, Electronics, Industrial, Automotive and Military.

Installation Tools

Helicoil Insertion Tools - Prewinder Type are available as both plain slotted and threaded mandrel captive prewinders rangining from size M1.6 , M2 – M42 and in UNC/UNF from #2-64 / 2-56 onwards .

Prewinder tools are best suited for easy & fatigue free installation of inserts in production line to achieve a high quality of insert installation & prevent jumping of coil threads. Threaded mandrel prewinders are also best recommended for successful installation of screw locking inserts and inserts having a fine thread pitch.

Thread Cutting Taps

Helicoil Threading Taps are available in HSS material as standardproduct and as specials in HSSE or HSS with High Cobalt contents.

Helicoil taps are designed and manufactured of high speed steel to the most rigid specifications in various types and styles to produce holes for Tolerance Classes 4H/5H and 6H in Metric series and 2B/3B in UNC/UNF series for use in the general range of aluminums, magnesiums, mild steels and alloy steels .

Types of taps:

Tapping
Conventional shop practice and production procedures, speeds, feeds and lubricants should be used in combination with proper fixturing and good tapping machines or tapping heads.

The tapped hole must be held within the stated pitch diameter limits for the required Tolerance Class of fit for the installed Helicoil Insert.

Surface Finishes
When anodizing, Iridite or other finishes are used, all tapped hole dimensions must be met after finishes are applied.

Gauges

Helicoil Gauges are available as Go/No Go thread plug gauges for inspection of tapped holes prior to Helicoil fitment. The gauges are available in 5H/6H class for Metric sizes and 2B/3B for UNC/UNF sizes.

Helicoil Tools

Tang Break-Off Tools

The driving tangs of Helicoil Inserts should be removed to eliminate their interference with the end of the assembled bolt. Their removal provides greater latitude in the depth location of the bolt.

Manual Tang Break-Off Tools are available for use with inserts up through 18mm / 3/4" nominal diameter.

Auto /Spring Loaded Tang Break-Off Tools are available for use with inserts up through 12mm / 1/2" nominal diameter.

The operation of Auto Tang Break-Off Tools is automatic, having a spring loaded, easily triggered punch that strikes a sharp, uniform blow against the tang of the installed insert. It can be operated with one hand.

For larger sizes use long nosed pliers. Bend tang up and down to snap off at notch.

Extraction Tools

TooIs to remove Helicoil Inserts are available for ranges M2 – M2.2 , 2.5 - 4.5mm,#3 - #8,. 5 - 10mm, #10 - 3/8" , 11 - 24mm, 7/16" - 1" , 27 - 39mm, 1-1/8" - 1-1/2"                

Extraction is done by applying the tool to the insert, striking the head of the tool a light blow and turning it counterclockwise, maintaining steady downward pressure.

Vacuum type Broken tang removal tool

This is a pneumatic operated tool suitable for applications where the broken tang needs to be easily removed from narrow holes in a mass production line.

Automation Equipment

Standard Equipment for Automatic & Semi- Automatic installation of Helicoils are available for production lines to meet the user requirements. Lowest installed cost is realised with Power Tools and Tape Feed - production rates up to 800 or more inserts per hour with little or no waste. Reel mounted / Tape Feed inserts are available & are best suited for automation application.
